how can i increase my dogs stamina?

i have a staffy cross pitbull, he's 8 years old, when he was young he was an athlete, walked constantly everyday, he loves it, but due to a medical condition i had i was unable to walk him for a year now when i walk him he dosent get very far before hes panting really heavily and out of breath, slowing down, then starts to lye down.. now i know hes getting on a bit with age but i know theres something i can do to help him a bit, hes still got a long life ahead of him

    Literally build up gradually, but don't expect him to reach the level of fitness he once was.

    Better to do several short walks a day and increase by 5 mins each walk when you feel that he is ready for it.

    keep exercising gradually increasing distance and speed.
