3mbps download speed?

Hi, I live so close to London, I am literally a couple of km from the M25 but my broadband download speed is a measly 3mbps. I don't understand why Ofcom says the avg Speed in rural areas is 4mbps but I, next to the largest city in Europe, have only 3. It's always been around 3 but sometimes the connexion loves to get a bit frisky and go up to a WHOPPING FIVE MBPS. It's absolutely crap. Today, I had BT infinity installed with the promise of 15mbps download speeds, I still have 3mbps and it is horrendously annoying. You see people online complaining that they 'only' have 38mbps but I'm sitting there for hours waiting for the very same forum to load. Why, oh why, do I have slower speeds in London than people in the Scottish Highlands and I am doubtful it is due to the 'new installation' of BT Infinity.

Update:

@Schweppe I know how these things work, I am a lot more technologically minded than most people. And BT did PROMISE me 15mbps. Their highest speed - that you're talking about - is 38mbps on BT Infinity 1. Surely I am closer to the exchange, being at London, than someone in the highlands or in another rural area. AND THIS IS FIBRE OPTIC BROADBAND. BT 'INFINITY'. JESUS CHRIST. Someone else who clearly knows NOTHING about computers. Isn't it funny that the answerer who lives in France is a damn sight nicer than you are.

I have only 120mbps fibre. Costs me only 75€/month including digital TV and telephony.

And I'm only right across the channel from you.

Oh look another moron touching a computer without knowing how they work. Take a class...then touch your computer.

You are connected via DSL over the phoneline. This means that your connection speed is determined by your distance from the telephone exchange as the cable is laid. For 3mbps your pairing would be in the 5-10km from the exchange range.

BT didn't promise you 15mbps they can't. They said UPTO. 15mbps is the max their dsl network will give you under optimal conditions and distance. That is to say in order to get the full 15mbps you'd have to live literally next to or inside of the exchange. That speed would drop to 6-7mbps by the first km away...

If you want fast, guaranteed bandwidth you need fibre, which is both expensive and comes with its own drawbacks.

Sorry your porn doesn't load fast enough at 3mbps though...but you can't have the world.
