Should I pay taxes if I tutor?

So a local SAT tutor wants to hire me as a temporary employee because his math assistant will be going on vacation for a whole month. I'm looking at about $200 per week or $10 per hour. So about $800 by the time I'm done. I've heard that if I make over $400 I have to report it to the IRS.

BTW, I'm 17 and still in high school.

Should I pay federal income tax?

Should I pay state (NJ) income tax?

Last time I worked (I was 16) my school made me fill out some employment form issued from the state. Do I need to fill that form out again?

How do I pay the taxes? Which form should I use?

This tutor usually pays his employees under the table, what if he tries to do the same with me? I don't like cheating the system, so can I pay the taxes myself?

If you are making only $800 in the entire year, then you probably won't have to pay "income" tax. However, you will have to pay "self-employment" tax (the name is misleading; this tax applies to anyone making $400 or more under the table, even if they are not what you would consider self-employed).

You can pay the taxes yourself.

Under the table with 800 of net profit from your schedule schedule C and the SE of your 1040 FIT you will owe self employment tax at 15.3% social security and medicare tax during the 2014 tax filing season for the 2013 tax year.

    Self-Employment Tax Analysis

    Social

    Security Medicare

    'Adjusted' earnings $800 $800

    Less: self-employment adjustment $61 $61

    Taxable self-employment earnings $739 $739

    Self-employment tax $92 $21

    Total self-employment tax $113

    Tax-deductible portion $65

on sch C and if your net is $400 or more(income less business expenses) you will file Sch SE and calculate your self employment tax, approx. 13.3% of the net it is probably very doubtful you will make $5800 total so this may not incur income taxes but the SE taxes have to be paid

You are required to file an income tax return. That said, if you make less than about $9000 you will usually end up paying no income tax. So fill out he form and calculate the amount of tax. You will see that it isn't as painful as you think!
