Boston fans are angry because the umpire had the right of discretion and Craig chose to run right over Middlebrooks and not on the baseline. They are also angry because it seems like after making an attempt on the ball, Middlebrooks is in a lose-lose situation as not matter what, legs up or legs down, if Craig trips, then obstruction is called.

How did Craig interfere with Middlebrooks? He was sliding into third and Middlebrooks missed the throw from Saltalamacchia. Craig got up and began to run home. Middlebrooks was lying in his path. Obstruction Craig's clear path to home. If you look at the attached video you can clearly see Demuth signalling obstruction before the ball arrives at home.

    This call was exactly right.

The runner was hindered. Period. That's all it takes. In this case, it happened because the feet came up. But if the fielder had left his feet down and the runner had been hindered, it still would have been obstruction. 2.00 OBSTRUCTION. And if the runner had not been hindered (i.e., he cleanly stepped over the legs) then obstruction would not be called.

And since the runner wasn't being played on at the time of the obstruction, the ball remains live, the umpire decides how much protection the runner is going to get. (The award of the next base is NOT automatic in this case.) When the play is made at the plate, the umpires rule that the runner would have been safe had the obstruction not occurred. Runner is then awarded the plate, run scores, game over. Rule 7.06(b).

Actually, because Saltalamacchia threw it away from 3rd, that was Middlebrooks diving for the ball. He kept his legs up when he fell and tripped Craig. Intentional or not, it's the right call

You must be a Red Soxs fan. Criag would have made it home on the bad throw to third if Middlebrooks wasn't in the way. It's the right call.
