the bad storm hitting the southern regions disruption of transport?

the reports of the chaos advise that 200 hundred trees fell across railway lines causing major problems it beggars belief that trees had been allowed in such proximity to rail tracks to grow so big they fell over the tracks in stormy weather surely someone should have seen the possibility of this happening One finds it hard to accept the excuse this was a very violent storm and infrequent of this magnitude, prevention is better than cure, isolated trees to fall even that should not be able to happen but 200, the mind boggles

Update:

Ralf's Smarts answer is surprising, once in a decade is once too many my friend luckily no one was killed by this,

Update 2:

Angelina I think you sadly missed the point on this issue, whatever the condition of the trees that fell over the tracks the number around =200= should not have been allowed to present such possibility however the remotest chance of it happening. I am completely amazed that not one person was injured or killed by this, as for the suggestion of sound proofing being the reason for these trees in such proximity to the actual line how can one compare the cost of up to date sound proofing against the cost of what could have been a terrible tragedy?

Trees are by rail tracks for a reason. They muffle the sound of trains travelling along the tracks from people living in houses that back onto them.

Any tree that fell would probably be one that was diseased or one with shallow root system.

Luckily this storm occurred when it was half term otherwise every school in its path would have been shut in case a twig blew into a playground! Heath and Safety would have ruled the day and taken precedence over common sense. No kids in the playground today!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. And actually how close to the lines were these trees, given that they were major trees, not just saplings. You surely can't denude the whole country of trees just because a storm like this, once in how-many years? happens to hit? The one good thing is how little disruption happened this time round. Kudos to those involved. But how about the poor girl who was killed in her trailer when a tree fell on her. Now THAT'S stupidity, even if my sympathies are of course, with her family. You'd not have found me sleeping in a trailer, period, with a storm like that was coming in.

According to Network Rail trees break up the noise of trains passing your house, most of the commuters on trains go to work and sit behind computers all day..why cant they stay at home and do that

half a morning's disruption once in a decade is a good trade off for all that sound and eyesore reduction trees provide..

hurray I have a new friend.. ermm no one was killed for a reason... the disruption thing you know.. giggle..
