So why does my convict cichlid seem to yawn?
She has had her own tank for a long time now and I'm adding a few Tetras that my Uncle gave to me to her tank. She seems to get along with them for the most part but I noticed that every once in awhile she will stick her lips out and open her mouth real wide like she's yawning. Why is she doing this???

hi.most fishes, especially the wide bodied ones do exhibit this "yawning" phenomena.(goldfish, angelfishes, mollies, oscars even bettas etc.) experts say that this is a normal behavior as anyone who has the capacity to take in oxygen are observe to yawn.
i worry however that your convict may take an appetite for your tetras.convicts are some of the most ill tempered cichlids in the hobby and they often gobble anything that they can get their mouths into. but let's hope your convict is well mannered and friendly.

depends on how and where. if she is doing it to her reflection in the glass it is a dominance display. it could also just be "Yawning" if there were other convicts they can lock lips and fight but she may be confused by the reflection in the glass.
