Blinker Problem on a Jeep?

I test drove a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee today and found the blinkers don't shut off by themselves. The salesman told me it was made that way. I don't believe that, but want to make sure I am correct that he or she is not telling the truth.

Update:

Going back in my notes, the check engine light is on, which according to him, is because the fuel available now. :-/

Here's the drill. The turn signals are turned off using a mechanism that is tripped by a cam on the steering column. The turn signal switch is anywhere from 45-90 dollars depending on where you buy it. Maybe more. It can be replaced, but it requires some taking apart of the steering column. A Chiltons or Haynes manual can show you how. But before you go spending the money, you would need to make sure that it's the switch and not some other component. Some vehicles have a "clockspring" on the steering column that connects the horn, cruise control, and other electrical components on the steering wheel. This is often the component that triggers the switch to turn off, and it is considerably more work and expense to fix. In fact, this is the problem I have with my car and it's not worth fixing.

Concerning the check engine light, there are dozens of reasons why this light is on, all of them are related to emissions in some way. If your state requires a smog check, it is unlikely that they will even check the car if that light is on. Furthermore, that light indicates that something is wrong. The light must be turned off and the problem that is causing it to come on must be fixed, or it will continue to come on. The system that triggers the light is part of the OBDII emissions system. A code reader needs to be attached to the system, which will tell a mechanic what is causing it.

What you need to do is back slowly away from this car, and when you feel it is safe, turn and run. This dealer is a crook, he is trying to sell you a car that he knows has problems that will cost you possibly a lot of money. I cannot stress enough that you don't buy this car.

Salesperson lied to you. ALL passenger vehicles made in the last 70 or so years have blinkers that turn-off automatically. The broken part is called the "turn signal cam". It's usually quite inexpensive, but requires pulling the steering wheel to replace. Have them fix it if you're considering purchasing the vehicle.

Source(s): I would highly recommend against purchasing the vehicle. Any dealer that would try to sell a vehicle in that condition and attempt to prey on a potential customer's presumed ignorance is one that sould be avoided.

There is a mechanism in the steering column that is broken. that is why the signals won't shut off. I'm pretty sure that what is broken is part of what they call the turn signal switch. It needs to be replaced.

The only vehicles that are manufactured (that I know of) with turn signals that do not shut themselves off are large trucks like Kenworth and such. I'm pretty positive that all passenger vehicles are made with their turn signals to shut themselves off. That's pretty common. That salesman was trying to dupe you. I wouldn't go back there.
