my dog has been restless recently. im not sure if it's related to my grandpa being sick?

my dog has been restless and acting strange since this weekend. she's been hiding under my bed and when place her on my lap (she's a chihuahua), she's shaking. so i had to hug her and carry her like a baby so she'll stop shaking.

for the past week, our family has been go through tough times. my grandpa has been in the hospital for days because of a terminal illness and he's not getting better. he lives in the province so we had to drive from the city to visit him in the provincial hospital. we brought my dog with us. but since pets aren't allowed in the hospital, she just stayed at our house in the province.

i duno if my dog being restless is related to this? my dog hasn't had any interaction with my grandpa since last week. but she's been acting really weird ever since we got back from the province last night.

my chihuahua doesnt stay in my room, she usually stays downstairs. but since we got back, she hasnt left my room. when i brought her downstairs to eat with me, she left and went straight to my room upstairs. which is not usual since she likes hanging out downstairs and seldom goes to my room on her own unless i carry her to my room.

Could be just she's picking up the general vibes going on but it could also be a coincidence - she could actually be sick. It wouldn't hurt, I think, to get her checked by your vet. Shaking can be a sign of pain, apart from fear and cold - or something neurological.

My sympathies re your grandpa and I hope your Chi will be okay - her being ill too you do not need!

I am sorry to read about your grandpa I hope his passing is peaceful. Your little dog can sense the vibes that happen when a family has to go through a death after an illness, he is also being uprooted so he's part of this process. All you can do is give the dog TLC and try not to uproot his daily routine as dogs get so used to this.

It will take time for you all in the meantime ressure the dog with words as they understand sadness and loss far more than us humans realise. You have a lovely little sensitive dog so be proud of him as he feels the pain coming from you.

Dogs can sense when we are sick. They can even smell it. He is hurting from this. Keeping her in your room where she can feel secure is a good thing and will help her heal. I am so sorry for you about your grandfather. It's very hard to lose someone.

If your dog is comforted by you, allow her to be with you as much as possible.

My ex mother in law is very sick. She is having many problems breathing. She is 81 and very weak. She's going to be wheel chair bound because she's fallen so many times. She keeps having strokes in her left eye. The doc told us that all we can do is to make her comfortable from now on.

I swear her dog knows this. He has been showing very different behavior. He doesn't like her to be around other people and if she is having a bad day, this dog will pee right in front of her. He knows that something is very wrong with her.

Dogs have the same emotions as we do. They get protective. They grieve and they act strange when something is changing. They know this.

Take comfort in knowing that your grandfathers dog takes comfort with you. She knows that something is very wrong. She also knows that she's safe with you.

I have had dogs that react like this after a trip. They dislike travelling and it takes them a few days to readjust to being back home. To add to this, if everyone is upset over your grandfather, she is further confused. Give her time and she will be fine, some dogs are just sensitive over any change in their lives and the trip and the new behaviors of her family have her in a funk.
