Why do some American "Christians"still support capital punishment while Christ teaches it is wrong?

In Matthew 5 ;38,39 Christ clearly teaches that an eye for an eye is against Gods Laws yet it seems many Christians want to completely ignore Christs teachings--one wonders why they still bother to call themselves Christians at all!

Because they like to cherry pick the best parts of the bible which fit in with their extremist views, instead of slavishly following it and its teachings.

They aren't real Christians, only desperadoes hoping to selfishly escape final judgement, but failing to realise they are the ones who will be first victim, assuming any of it is real, which is stretching credibility. Or maybe they just lack a decent, rounded education.

Jesus never taught against the capital punishment. Jesus advised in favor of observing the law of the land one lives in. He taught individuals. He did not teach governments.

@Andy Wordman. I am not in favor of capital punishment for adultery. I don't think any modern government is.

Christ was all about forgiveness. He even forgave the woman caught in adultery.

While that may be a good rule to practice in one's individual life, imagine if a government follows that rule - forgives every criminal. Would that work? In fact, the government would fail in keeping safe the law-abiding citizens, which is the duty of a government. Criminals do not understand the language of love, only the language of threat and we need to do everything in our power to stop crime.

Do you know why we have crimes? Because we allow it. A society gets what it deserves.

Any true Christian has to know that that human beings are fallible and all human institutions are bound to get it wrong some of the time. The death penalty is no exception and its worst mistakes are irreversible. No matter how hard we try, we can’t eliminate all these mistakes.

    Sadly, some people ignore this.

Not all capital punishment is based on retribution - sometimes it aims to deter. Nevertheless, I agree with you, it is not what a merciful God would expect of us.

If he was against capital punishment why did he allow the Romans to kill him? he was a bad boy and took his punishment stop trying to make him look like a hippy.

    Really? Did Jesus teach this?

Well why did he say this then in the very same Bible.

"THE PRINCE OF PEACE," boasts that he had not come to bring

peace on earth but fire and division!

"I came to set the earth on fire, and how I wish that it were

    ALREADY KINDLED.

"Do you supposed that I came to bring peace to the world?

No, not peace BUT DIVISION." LUKE 12:49 and 51

The "God" of War: Jesus said: "Think not that I am come to send

peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a

    SWORD." (Matthew, 10:34)

Maybe you reading the Bible upside down.

Because while Americans do love Jesus they're not married to him. It's picking the parts that they agree with that they love. You don't see them inviting homeless people to dinner instead of their friends either, despite that that's what Jesus instructed to do.

Christ never taught it was wrong. Read Romans chapter 13.
