possible closure of ship yards?

Understanding of this intention is very complex and very sad news to many workers in Scotland like others I have heard arguments from both sides but I have not heard any mention exactly where our future ships are to be built or, is it the intention to reduce our navy further as the army, and other of our forces. Folks the way things are shaping up as far as our defence capability is concerned things are not what they should be, from a lay persons point of view this intention is a step too far. possibly someone more in the loop than myself could explain the reasoning behind this?

As you will see from my link,Portsmouth ship yard are to close after our two new aircraft carriers are completer.

As you see it says work will be transferred to the two Scots shipyards. A bad day for England.

Chosen Man is right. Scots workers are being blackmailed into voting against independence with the promise of shipbuilding contracts. The contracts will NOT be announced until after the referendum.

No matter what the Scots decide, I genuinely believe the contracts will go down south to English yards and that the government will find some excuse not to award them to Scotland.

The government has closed down everything else in Scotland and despite past promises have betrayed us time and time again. Why should this time be any different.

Even sadder for those in England who could lose their jobs and cannot blackmail Parliament with an Independence Referendum.

The good news is that the new Contracts, for the Frigates, will not actually be signed until after the Scottish Referendum, so Portsmouth and Bristol might get to keep their jobs and get a few extra into the bargain.

I am sorry for the workers who have lost their jobs, but our defence spending is totally unrealistic considering the size of this country and any real dangers to it. We are the 4th biggest defence spender in the World. Who on earth is going to invade us? Perhaps if management and governments of the past had been a little more astute in investing in and modernising shipyards, we would still be building the wonderful commercial ships for which were so famous. There have never been more cruise ships, cargo boats etc in service. Perhaps we should have another try

When will people understand that jobs will become less each year, technology will reduce jobs to a minimum and people will have to get used to living on the dole. Eventually there will be an elite few in highly paid skilled jobs with the rest of us enjoying all that leisure time that they promised us, they just omitted to tell us about the money.

Large surface warships (that is what we are talking about) have been made obsolete by cruise missiles, modern submarines and drones years ago.

Sedan chair factories did well for a time too.

    It's over.
