You should probably go to the Avast forums and get some help there. It's free and they should be able to help you.

Just download revo uninstaller and uninstall avast thro its wizard .It is simple and fast. Just open revo uninstaller and select avast and click uninstall button at the top. It will give a screen. Select the 4 th option, the last in the screen and the wizard will first uninstall thro avast uninstaller, the program uninstaller. After that, it fixes the registry residues, which is very easy, if you click next screen the registry entries of avast will be shown in BOLD letters , just select those bold letter items only and click delete. Again if the screen remains, expand the directories and you will find the bold letter of avast files . Please delete, and then click next and select all and delete it. Now your old avast is no more in the pc. Just download or exe the avast free anti virus from the avast.com site and install it and then update it. You can easily over come any problem. It is 100% best free ware by any comparison. It has all the scan in free version itself
Revo uninstaller link, in the last of the page

Hello Geek,
I appreciate you have mentioned that you have used the "Avast Clean Tool" and have booted into Safe mode. What I am not clear on from this, is whether you followed the Clean Tool's instructions to Boot into Safe Mode and run the Clean Tool from there. Perhaps this is what you mean, but if you did not run it from Safe Mode, I would suggest you try that.
Regards,
Robert.
