Is the word "outrage" being overused by the media today?

Back when I was young an outrage was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec 7th, 1941. that will be 72 years ago next month and I wonder how many will remember that.

Update:

I consider Pearl Harbor an outrage along with another handful or so dates that will "live in infamy". I just didn't mention all of them in the event this question doesn't survive the day.

Most people will remember it. My mom had her 13th birthday the day before.

"Outrage" is also what happened to the Trade Towers, The Pentagon, The Tube, the embassies in Africa, and train bombings in Madrid.

As far as the modern version of the word--its no more "outrageous" then how many things are "awesome," and how being a shopper in a mall or a student in a school where a crazy guy shoots guns makes people "heroes" too. And then Congress not getting around to passing a budget is now "a cliff."

It depends on what you mean by "media". I have heard talk show hosts refer to things as outrageous, things that aren't even a blip on the radar to me. However, when the (and I hate to use the term) mainstream media refer to things like children being gunned down in school or three women kidnapped and held as hostages for ten years or the 9/11 attacks as outrageous (among many other things), then I tend to agree.

To me, there are words that are far more overworked than outrage. Words like "awesome" and "mind-boggling" and "superstar".

Breaking New, yes... this can be anything to draw our attention. Breaking New, an outage, business owner outraged over another business owner blowing leaves onto his property, complains to city officials about the dust and noise is a little different than other countries getting blown apart with bombs. Now there is dust and noise... Another word getting big attention is AWESOME... everything is awesome

Oh but read a Victorian newspaper - they were just as bad.

Yea, and I am outraged by it.
