I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that question. All animals, including humans, are driven toward procreation. That is just the nature of life. Different religions offer different ideas as to what happens to our minds and memories when we die, but it is all speculation. It is probably safe to say that if we retain any "self" that we are unable to communicate with the living, or it would be happening all the time. For certain the energy that we house within our bodies is returned to the universe, so it seems likely that it is dispersed and that we lose any sense of self. But that's just speculation on my part.
