HELP! My furnace only comes on sometimes during the "On" cycle. Why?

My gas furnace sometimes comes on and sometimes does not. When it's on, it works just fine. The pilot light is sometimes on and sometimes off. When it's on, sometimes it doesn't light the main burners.

I replaced the furnace filter and the thermostat just last year. The thermostat cycles on and off as programmed and the wiring is 100% correct.

What may be causing this and are there any DIY steps I can take to remedy it?

The other answer is right about not having a model number or brand.

You have a standing pilot system, so it is old and old ones get dirty so the pilot tube should be removed and cleaned, blown out, and then the thermocouple replaced, then see what happens. That's the cheapest thing to try first. Try not to bend the aluminum pilot gas supply tube, but if you do, they are cheap, too.

We have no idea what model furnace you have.Different models operate differently so brand and model # is important because we are not going to guess at the many different types there is. Please restate your question with some facts
