What did Nietzsche mean when he said "God is dead"? Is God really dead?

He meant that the authority of religiously-dictated codes of morality was disintegrating, and with it, social order and all good things that social order brings.
"In 1889, Nietzsche began to develop mental illness that would leave him under his family's care for the rest of his life." Take his thinking with that grain of salt.

HE MEANT "GOD IDEA IS DEAD"
There would be one person who would take Darwinism and humanism to the very outer limits, the maximum beyond which there could be nothing else. Friedrich Nietzsche was up to that task.
1) He proposed first that the God idea was dead.
2) that no first principles could be proven, so that rational thought could not exist.
3) that mankind exists only as a link between the animals and the “ubermench” (over-man). So the elite class had an obligation to breed the best to the best, and to control and manage the “herd”.
4) Then Nietzsche prophesied, that because of himself, Friedrich Nietzsche, the 20th century would see cataclysmic wars unlike any ever seen before. Nietzsche was the official philosopher for the Nazi party. Lenin had a bust of Nietzsche on his desk, and his books in his drawer. Nietzsche had formed the ethic that plagued the twentieth century.

Firstly, this is in the wrong section. This should be in philosophy. Now you're only going to get spammed by Atheist/Christian flamers who are looking for an argument (exhibit A, 'Atheist Cat.')
When Nietzsche said 'God is dead' he is expressing his concern about the rise of atheism. All throughout history, religion has given humanity a purpose. Without such a purpose, Nietzsche fears that the world would descend into chaos. It has nothing to do with the crucifixion of Christ; it's about how people are not accepting God anymore; and this could be catastrophic.

Nitztsche was most likely being who he was a writer and poet etc, and just writing down what came naturally.
About "Is God really dead.
As far as I know we have 2 fathers on who is our physical Father and two who is our spiritual Father ie God Father of our soul the eternal part of us the one who still needs to be given support so that its consciousness remains we have slipped into thinking ourselves to be bodies..just bodies but fact is we don't have a soul but we are the soul we have a body. You see this is a fact.
And lastly about God
He is directly also a soul but remains incorporial means he never takes a body of His own does not go through the cycle of birth and rebirth like us and is therefore called the supreme soul God and like us souls He too is eternal..forever. If this is interesting to you you can find out more about this at:

Ya so we can see God is immortal eternal only difference is as mentioned He does not take birth or rebirth.
Hope this gave some insight to Nitsche and

Perhaps Nietzsche let that statement go as a joke to those who claim that Jesus was God.

A few years after he said that, God gave his reply:
"Nietzsche is Dead."
Signed: God

I'm not sure what context Nietzshe used that phrase in, but I always interpreted it as meaning that God doesn't blatantly interact with humans as much as he did in the Old Testament.

he was saying that humanity had lost sight of the true meaning of what God is. I personally think that the church has done so, but that each individual still has some idea of what god is, in terms of their place in the universe. maybe that makes each of us a super man.
