How did they make food spicy before Chilies were imported to the old world?

Chilies, both hot and sweet, are new world plants...

Asia, India/Southeast Asia, the Middle East, etc. have super hot food as staples but I can't believe that these cultures didn't have 'hot'foods before 1492 and Columbus bringing chilies back to the old world...

When I search recipes, they all say chilies are the source of the heat, but is this just because today this is the easiest substitute to find or was food lacking in burn before new to old world trade?
