Jail for Jehovah’s Witness elder who molested girls

Jonathan Rose

A Jehovah's Witness elder who was exposed as a paedophile

A Jehovah's Witness elder who was exposed as a paedophile on Facebook has been jailed.

Jonathan Rose was branded a hypocrite as he was locked up for molesting two little girls he met through the church.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Rose, of New Moston , won the trust of his victims’ families before targeting their daughters. His youngest victim was just five-years-old when she was groped by him in her own home. The other was ten when Rose, then 27, kissed her sexually.

Rose was first accused of indecently assaulting a teenage girl he met through the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1995. He was acquitted of that offence in a trial and went on to become an elder in his congregation.

However, after his first accuser branded him a ‘paedo’ on Facebook , his crimes against the two other girls came to light. Rose was found guilty of two charges of indecent assault and has now been jailed for nine months and banned from visiting homes where there are children present.

The joiner, who is married with children and continues to protest his innocence, showed no emotion as he was jailed and made subject to a sexual offences prevention order. He must sign the sex offenders register for life.

The court heard that he even sat in judgement in a church ‘investigation’ into the second victim when she was a teenager.

Her ‘entirely normal’ teenage behaviour was thought to be ‘inappropriately sexual’ by elders.

Antony Longworth, defending, handed the judge a bundle of supportive letters from fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses which he described as expressing ‘disagreement or disbelief’ about the guilty verdicts.

But Judge David Stockdale QC told Rose: “You are now utterly disgraced – even though many members of that community still place a great deal of faith in you. The Jehovah’s Witnesses... upholds very high standards of moral behaviour – you deviated altogether from those standards.”

The family of Rose’s first accuser say they were encouraged to cover up their allegation. He was cleared of groping the then teenage girl in 1995 trial, but she would go on to be a witness in the latest court case. Her family say they were hounded out of the Jehovah’s Witnesses when they expressed concerns.

Her father told the M.E.N: “They held a meeting where they stood on a platform and said no-one should ever take a ‘brother’ to court. They dismissed our complaint as something that happened between teenagers.

“We were ostracised, and then told to get out of the congregation after the trial.”

A spokesman for the Jehovah’s Witnesses said: “Everyone has become more aware of how to deal with these issues in recent years. In no way would the Jehovah Witnesses purposefully try to protect anyone who is accused of serious crimes.”

Facebook, and any other social-networking site is not "strongly discouraged". I know of many Jehovah's Witnesses, including myself, who have an account on the site. It's a convenient way of staying it touch with friends and family, no matter where you are. Like many good things, they can be used in a negative way. For that reason, we are advised to BE CAREFUL when visiting sites like these, as it's easy to get caught up in the wrong kind of association and also be exposed to spiritually-damaging material.

As it relates to this claim of child molestation; Just because someone is a Jehovah's Witness - does not make them perfect. Just like any other human, we have the power of free will, as well as an inherited sinful nature. That means, anyone, even if they are a devout Witness, can do bad things. For example, King David slept with the wife of one of his soldiers and had him killed. Was King David a bad person beforehand? No, he was a devout servant of Jehovah who had made a bad choice. It happens.

Am I condoning this apparent mishap? No, not at all. My point is ~ there's no point in blowing it up as a bigger deal than it is just because the person is a Jehovah's Witness. What do you have to say about the many other cases? Teachers - the people who we send our kids two almost every day of the week. There have been numerous cases of some of them molesting children. There have even been several cases of church leaders; bishops, deacons, priests, molesting little children.

What do you have to say about them?

My point is, as mentioned before, being a Jehovah's Witness does not make you perfect. We still have the power to make the wrong choice, due to inherited sin. But, we try our best to avoid it. We live by Bible standards and follow God's guidelines to living a morally clean life. Does that mean things will go smoothly all the time? No. Does that mean major pitfalls won't happen? No. You can't have a perfect organization, with imperfect people.

If this story is true, then that Elder is obviously not an Elder anymore. We do not condone such vile acts, and as stated in the story, he now has to deal with human authorities. In the future, he will also have to answer to Jehovah God himself. We're all free to make our own choices - we just have to make sure we make the right ones as much as possible.

Men like this are a dime a dozen. I also heard of a lunch lady molesting a school boy. Predators are everywhere. Religion doesn't make them saints. God does not forgive those who molest innocent children.

Devoted JWs claim that such reports are fabricated stories from their enemies and ex members.

The Watchtower organisation has not been called a 'pedophiles' paradise' for nothing...

The truth is that the WT organisation habours pedophiles appoints them as elders and even allows them to go door to dooe preaching to the homes of unsuspecting persons.

The image of the WT organisation means a lot more than protecting innocent children.

Doubtful that you will get a JW to respond. They tend to ignore child molestation questions because they are too "difficult" for them to defend.

JW's like to believe that since their "organization" is spirit directed that less occurrences of sexual abuse happen among them. If anything, it happens more often. The simple reason is their whole culture of xenophobia and distrust of "worldly" people. They go to unbelievable lengths to defend a fellow brother despite tons of evidence counter to this, but they won't give a non-JW the time of day.

The question should be, why is this paedophile NOT disfellowshipped (ex-communicated if you prefer) clearly not frowned upon by his fellow congregation members!
