In the movie, the skeletons, or boneys as they call them, are pretty much zombies thaat have lost anything human about them. They are pretty much zombies that lost hope. Now, they hunt and kill anything and everything with a heartbeat. Unlike the zombies like R, they cant turn back into somewhat humans and think or love again.

Since very few people have memories of the age you are stating, I wouldn't be surprised if this was something someone told you and you took it as your own memory. Either that, or you were asleep and don't remember the course of events. I'm not making light of what you have said, but a child that young does not have the vocabulary skills to describe what you saw, especially the greasy hair with greasy black clumps. This sounds more like a story told to you to scare you, like talking about the boogeyman, but telling you at such a young age would make it seem like an actual memory and not a dream, though it also could have been that though you don't remember it that way.

They were called Boneys. They're basically zombies who lost all human aspects in themselves. Basically, there was no turning back for them, and they were empty shells that hunt anything with a heartbeat.
