Because Satan knew that Jesus was not God, but the Son of God. The Devil would never have made an effort to tempt God himself. That would have been in vain, for the Bible states that God cannot be tempted by evil.

    James 1:13

    New King James Version (NKJV)

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

Is Satan not the most evil of all spirit creatures? Satan also knew that Jesus was the first of Jehovah's creations. Colossians 1:15

He knew that Jesus although a perfect human, had freewill and could therefore be tempted into disobedience to God. Satan himself was created perfect, but we know how that turned out. He certainly misused his freewill and he wanted to tempt Jesus to do the same.

Jesus remained faithful to his God and Father, not once succumbing to Satan's evil tactics.

I always say based on facts from the Bible, that Satan would speak nine truths and give you one big Lie, which may overpower all the truth spoken. Satan did speak one truth here but in a derogatory way, of trying to disrespect Jesus who is technically his Creator, because Jesus is part of the Godhead or the Triune God, and was present in the Genesis Creation with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was present in Heaven when Satan was kicked out because of his rebellion. Jesus told his disciples in the gospel " I saw Satan like Lightning fall from Heaven." Jesus was Satan boss in Heaven and still is. So of course Satan's reference of Jesus is erroneous, by saying "IF" and mocking him, he knows that Jesus is the Son of God. So in this mockery of the majesty of Jesus, he inadvertently acknowledges Jesus, "To be the Son of God" Satan is" the Father of Lies" In the Bible in Matthew 8:28-32:"When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. And suddenly they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. So the demons begged Him, saying, "If You cast us out, permit us to go away in the the herd of swine." So demons and Satan acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God and they know Jesus when they served Him in Heaven. In John 3:16:"For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that who soever believeth on Him will not perish but have everlasting life" Jesus always represented God as His Father. The Godhead comprises of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, three in one but Indivisible and in Unity in Purposes. Peace Out

    More important question:

If Jesus was alone in the desert, who the (row of asterisks) was there to write down the conversation?

It's just like Charles Foster Kane dying all alone in "Citizen Kane".

How does anybody KNOW that his last word was "Rosebud"?

Source(s): Citizen Kane was a very popular work of fiction, based somewhat on the life of William Randolph Hearst, a real person.Perhaps the Gospels are somewhat based on the life of Jesus of Nazareth, a real person. And, in a similar manner, it's possible that stuff was made up.

Jesus was, in His incarnate form, the Son of God since He did not have an earthly father.
