Can you play with your hamster?

Obviously not like you'd play with a dog, more like you'd play with a rat. Yesterday I tried it with my hamster (Syrian) and he seemed to be responding- when I petted him he groomed himself and then nibbled/ licked my fingers in what seemed to be an attempt to groom me.

He only did this for a few minutes before he got bored and wanted to run, so I put him back in the cage, but were we really playing or did I just imagine it?

Update:

He is in fact tame. :)

I do the walking onto my hands thing too, but he's not so into that, because he's really big and so he doesn't have room to walk ON my hand, so he steps from hand to hand, but it's slower than he'd like.

Oh, and my question sounds like I didn't play with him before- I play with him pretty much every day. I just hadn't tried this method of playing with him.

Yeah of course you can play with it! You just need to make it interesting, they don't want to just walk around. Maybe make an obstacle course out of different things around your house (as long as they are hamster safe of course)! There are tons of different things to do with your hamster even though I don't have any other ideas. Try searching google for different things to do with your hammy. A few years ago, I had a syrian that was so lovable I did everything with him! I was only 10 at the time so my stepsister and I would take him in a stroller meant for dolls and walk him around the block! It may sound funny but he loved it!

Yes you can and in fact it is better for the hamster if you do play with it. Other wise it becomes very unsocial and bites people but it is recommended that you play with it for around 30 minutes and then put it back in its cage

    Yes indeed :)

Make sure he is tamed (it sounds like he is)

They play and show love in differant ways than cats or dogs.

Put your hamster on one hand and then place the next hand in front of it. Your hamster should walk onto the hand you just put in front of it. Do this again and again for a while. This makes them tamer and also gives them exercise!
