What makes a good picture for a portrait tattoo?
I am getting a portrait of my grandmother to commemorate all that she has done for me. She has raised me when nobody else wanted to and I owe her my life. About a year ago she got sick and was in the hospital for about 6 months maybe longer. The idea of losing her made me lose all hope but she made it through, and recovered just in time to watch me walk across the stage and get my diploma. After being sick, she lost an immense amount of weight, which changed the way she looks drastically. I have though of whether I wanted to get a picture of her from her prime in her 20s but I want something that looks like how I see her. My question is Do I choose a picture from now or from before she was sick. Also is a profile or a front view better for a portrait. I know I want this, I just want some advice as to what picture would make the best portrait. If anyone has any insight, I would be happy to see it. Thank you

I don't know, only you can choose what will make you happy. I wanted to get a tattoo of my mom, but im too damned hairy hahahaa. I don't want a hairy pic of my mom, but if I did get a portrait of her, I would also get one of how I remember her looking in my time. I will tell you this, though. the best portrait tattoo artist out there now is a guy named Nikko Hurtado. Check out his work. Just go do an image search on his name.

Alot of detail in the face in the picture so the artist can capture the expression and characteristics of the person. Without a detailed picture the portrait could come out looking like anyone. Older photos are harder to use because you cant see the detail in the faces that you need to make the person look like their self. If you cant find a really detailed picture. Take it to an artist and sometimes if they are use to using photoshop they can clean up an old photo to get a little more define definition out of it
