Che tempo verbale e' in inglese was + verbo al passato?

Esempio: was published

Io so che il simple past si forma con il verbo avere ( have ) ma invece ogni tanto trovo, davanti alla forma ed, il tempo to be.

Mi spiegate perché'?

    perchè è al passivo, sempre al simple past

    I have published = io ho pubblicato

    The book was published = il libro è stato pubblicato

    Semplicissimo :)
