The discount is a percentage. Percent comes from per-cent, meaning every one hundred (a penny is one cent because there are 100 cents in 1 dollar).
So, the first thing you do is take the "per-cent" and make it "per-one" by dividing it by 100: 27.8/100= 0.278
So the discount is 0.278 for one, for each dollar. And the item has a list price of 213.14, so we multiply 213.14 x 0.278 = $59.25 is your discount. Then, 213.14 - 59.25= $153.89 is your net price.
Here is a short cut you can apply once you get comfortable with my explanation above:
If the discount is 0.278 for every dollar, you must be paying 1 - 0.278 = 0.722 for every dollar. So, multiply 213.14 x 0.722 = 153.89

Really? 100(%)-27.8(%)=72.2(%)
$213.14*0.722 (Which is a way of asking your calculator 'what is 72.2% of $213.14?') = $153,88708.
Rounded off, $153,89. This isn't rocket Science!
