How long does a dental deep cleaning take, is four appointments the norm?

This is what my new dental office wants. I've never heard fo this before. Usually it takes one appointment. What's going on. My friend said the same thing happened to him at that office.

    If you need 4 quadrants of scaling&root planing (a deep cleaning) throughout your whole mouth offices either do that in 2 or 4 appointments.
