The Taliban is a very old organization dating back all the way to the Cold War. After WW2 the European powers went bankrupt and most had to pull out of all their colonies. This left Afghanistan governmentless and caused a power gap to ensue. Many warlords and groups tried to take power, but the predominant one was an Islamic movement that would eventually be known as the Taliban. When Russia invaded Afghanistan during the Cold War the US actually supported the Taliban in effort to repel Russian invasion of Afghanistan and save them from Communist influence. The Afghans succeeded but after the victory the US abandoned the Taliban, confident that they had "upheld democracy" in Afghanistan and left the people to starve and suffer after their country was ravaged by the Russians. Thus Anti-American sentiment rose in this area. This sentiment only grew once Israel's power solidified and the persecution of Arabs and Muslims became very common in the West. Eventually after a long period of instability the Taliban gained a strong foothold as the central power of the Afghan warlords and began its tyrannical rule of Afghanistan. They believed in a very hardcore Islamic code that abused women regularly if they didn't wear Burkas and Veils and even stoned men who didn't have beards They hated everything Western and saw the West as being pure evil. A really good movie depicting this transformation is "The Kite Runner." I recommend you watch it, and you could use it as a source. Otherwise I can't help you sourcewise.

The Taliban was a government party that took over Afghanistan shortly after the Soviets were pushed out. They, were and are primarily a hard right Islamic religious party, with one of the main influencers being Bin Laden. It is for this reason that they are same thing as Al Qaeda except that they were the government organization. There beliefs for that matter where the same as that of Al Qaeda, and they heavy supported Al Qaeda by allowing them to have training bases and arms. As for their beliefs, the wanted am Islamic world, ruled by Islamic religious law, they wanted to destroy the US and Israel. Basically, once again the same as Al Qaeda.

Source(s): As for sources, there is a lot, I would suggest looking at government pages first, then news paper articles.

They are a very conservative (backwards) sect of Islam.

They're in Afghanistan because that's where they are from.

The organization was formed by the CIA to fight against the Soviet Union.

    "please do not use...Wikipedia"

Why don't you use Wikipedia? Oh, I know. You got a homework assignment, and your teacher is smart enough to compare student's answers with online sources to see if you copy-and-paste.
