Is the oil level sensor easy for a mechanic to check and fix/replace?
My 1996 Olds 88's oil level light has been coming on now and then, but I think the oil level is fine. Is the oil level sensor something that is easy to check and fix, or does it require a lot of labor that would make it not worth it?
It is not the oil pressure light. It is the oil level light. This car has both.

Oil level light or oil pressure warning light? Some cars have both.
The level sensors are an easy fix, but the oil pressure sender often requires draining the engine oil before replacement as the sensor is designed to stick into the oil. An oil pressure sensor periodically coming on with proper oil level can be an indication that the engine's oil pump is going bad. If it is the oil pressure sensor, have a mechanic check your engine.

It is not really a low oil level sensor but a low oil pressure sensor. It is possibly bad but more likely the pressure actually dips sometimes enough to turn it on. As engines age the oil pressure can go down due to wear. The oil pump can also weaken. It should not be a problem unless the light comes on more than not. A mechanic can hook up an oil gage to be sure.

OK JH , first:
This is called an Oil pressure sensor. ( "oil sending unit" )
When the oil pump loses pressure ( whether form no/low oil in the engine, or from a bad pump , the light comes on.
Yes, the sensor can go bad , but unless it's leaking oil from the sensor, or the wire to it s bare and touching metal , you may have a pressure problem.
The 1996 OLDS 88 "oil sending unit" is relatively easy to reach. There is a special wrench/socket that fits , or can come out with vise grips (if enough room allows).
This is it here:

HI, DONT THINK THE OIL IS FULL.. MAKE SURE.. Low oil can Kill a motor... its very simple to check.. open the hood find the dip stick {oil check stick} with motor OFF .. pull the stick out wipe it off, stick it back in and pull it out and see where the level is....make sure car is on level ground..
good luck
