What Did Jesus Actually Teach? John 17:15, 16?

It may come as a surprise to some that Jesus actually said that his followers should be “no part of the world, just as [he was] no part of the world.John 17:15, 16

Why would Christ encourage his disciples to take such a stand?

Jesus’ beloved disciple the apostle John provided an answer. He wrote: “The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.1 John 5:19.

The four gospels, and other references to Jesus's teachings, were not written down until decades after the events they described. They were largely based on people's recollections. It's understandable that different people recalled different incidents and emphasized different things.

Some churches believe that it's a Christian's responsibility to be a good example to the rest of society, and to demonstrate Jesus's love, compassion, and spirituality to the world. Other churches believe that it's important to live as much apart from ordinary society as possible, in order to avoid sinful ideas and customs.

Some churches welcome seekers and sinners at whatever stage they're at in their spiritual journey. They feel that even mild interest is better than total apathy or outright rejection. Others take the "My way or the highway" approach, and insist on conformity to their particular doctrines.

In today's world, there are major versions and denominations of Christianity. It's quite possible to find one whose beliefs and traditions seem reasonable to you.

It sounds like a don't drink the kool aid type of deal. But really you need to use a concordence to properly understand.

My opinion on this question is to obey the 10 commandments, to participate in the sacrement, to recognize ash wedsday,etc.... and not to harm others most of all, and if this world has pushed me to this extent, then to choose to follow christ instead of taking anothers life.

There are all kinds of good christian movies out now. They have well known and not so well known actors, but some of these movies touch on this question you have. Example: SIX THE MARK UNLEASHED).

You are quoting from a prayer of Jesus, where He does not ask for Christians to be taken out of the world, but that they be protected from the evil one, and that they be sanctified (i.e. set apart for a holy purpose). Jesus goes on to say that He is sending His followers out into the world, with the gospel (the message they are to proclaim, verse 20) so that others will believe in Jesus through their witness to Christ.

Christians have to be different to worldly people who are not sanctified (i.e. not set apart for a holy purpose). People have to see in Christians the Spirit of Christ, seeing that Christians are different in an attractive way, because they now belong to Christ, and not to this world. Romans chapter 8 is an excellent part of the Bible to learn more about that. Do read it, if you are not already part of those who belong to Christ by the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is God in human flesh. God is not human but is a spirit and nobody can look upon him without instant death. So when he said that He is not of this world He was telling the truth, He is not, He is God.

We are to be in the world, but part of the world.

That means we are not to withdraw & isolate ourselves.

But we are not to copy the immorality of others.
