Accelerated Reader help?
At my middle school we do Accelerated Reader, but all of the books that I like to read and most people read (The Hunger Games, teen fiction, etc) are like level 4 or 5. I honestly find this kind of sad, but all the same I don't want to read those books and take the tests on them because I want my level to be at or above my level (grade 8).
What books can I read that have a high level, but aren't like War and Peace (which I tried). I'm supposed to get 34 points, and I can read fairly well, but books like that just won't work. Are there any modern, enjoyable books that have a level of 8 or higher? At least almost that high?

Sadly Linley, the average reading skills these days isn't very high. A lot of kids aren't helped at home with their reading. A lot of parents reading skills aren't that high either. Some parents just don't give a darn. I'm glad to see that you care. I would suggest that you discuss this issue with your teacher or school counselor or maybe your school or even public librarian. I also see that things such as the internet and cell phone texting has eroded our language and reading and writing skills. That's so sad. A lot of people can't even fill out a job application or fill out a resume. I applaud you for wanting to improve your skills.
I wish you the best of Good Luck.

The Harry Potter books are worth high points. Also check out authors such as Stephen King (assuming your parents/teachers are okay with you reading these books with more mature subjects). James Patterson writes both young adult and adult books that are interesting and exciting. The Traveling Pants series is fun, and should be at your level. You might also want to check out Eve Duncan and Judy Blume. They have written so many excellent books, I bet there's something interesting you might like. If you're very mature, and don't mind crying, try Dave Pelzer's Child Called It series.
For all of these books and authors, check to make sure the books are on AR before you start reading them.
Here's the other thing - all throughout school, including college, you're going to have assignments you don't like and don't want to do. You're going to have to figure out how to do the assignment and give the teacher what they want, so you might want to go ahead and just read a few books to get yourself to 34 points, then you can read what you want. If you're a good reader you should be able to get the assignment done fairly quickly and easily, and then you can go back to reading whatever you want.
