want to get a laptop for son but not a lot of money and he's already broken one. Seeing a lot of refurbished that are affordable to me but not sure if it's a good idea. Also, what's difference between windows xp and windows 7? Help, I'm highly computer illiterate!!

The difference between Windows XP and Windows 7 is the user interface. Both are Operating Systems (OS) developed by Microsoft. These days most laptops ship with Windows 7 or 8 OS
Start with the cheapest laptop you can buy. There are lots of Black Friday / Cyber Monday under going right now at Best Buy, TigerDirect, eBay, etc

there is nothing in a laptop to "refurbish" most have just been wiped over with lemon pledge , buy a used on on ebay from a seller with thousands of good feedbacks a laptop can go for half its new price after 18 months

start him with the cheapest laptop you can buy ...try fry's or tigerDirect they usually have laptops for sale
as for XP and win7, i would get win7 since MSN won't be supporting XP much longer, win8 too much problem
