Car insurance and chipped windscreen?

I recently chipped my front windscreen and need to get it fixed. It is a chip, not a crack and not very deep. I have scoured through my insurance documents and I am very confused. I have an excess of £100 but not sure if I have to pay this is the windscreen does not need to be replaced.

If I have to pay the excess to get the chip fixed Im sure I can get it fixed cheaper elsewhere.

What is normal as I dont want to call the insurance company and pay £100 if I can get it fixed for cheaper without contacting them.

I am hoping the excess only gets paid if the windscreen needs replacing, but they way its written in the documents does not make it super clear without a dictionary nearby.

Most comprehensive policies which include glass cover carry an excess for glass replacement, windscreen (chip) repairs are usually free. A few policies require a (smaller) contribution for repairs, but this is normally stated on your policy.

Check your Policy Schedule or Key Facts. If you can't find anything written, give your insurer a call. If there is an excess for repairing chips it might be £10, or £25 if it isn't free. In the rare case where you're not covered for chip repairs, or that your excess is the same as it would be for replacement, keep a claim off your history and look at having it repaired by an acknowledged repair specialist.

    I recommend Glass Doctors.

Some insurance policies cover windshield repairs such as yours with no deductible others don't. If yours does, you're actually paying for it in higher premiums. If it doesn't, in most locations there are repair shops, like Safelite, that will do the job for a bit less than 100 GBP. If the windshield needs to be replaced its much more. You could always call the insurance company and ask.

Source(s): recently had one done on an old Seat while in the UK for 80GBP.

The dealer of the car or any other state inspection station can tell you IF the front window glass needs to be replaced.
