  • Troubleshooting hydraulic clutch?

'94 Ranger, 3.0, 5sp., 123k. Clutch does not disengage fully when pedal is depressed. Came on suddenly with no noticeable indications that you would expect if it were a hydraulic leak or failing master/slave cylinder. Truck can be driven by starting it while in 1st and making shifts without clutch but after a full stop its really hard to force it into 1st. I suspect its either/or a combination of problems with master or slave but would like to determine which one. Anyone have any ideas to make that determination?

  • Thermostat wiring problem?

Specifically for paranut5 - I apologize for handing the selection of best answer to my last question over to the group but neither answer actually solved my problem at that time. Since then, I found that the installers had done a bit of wire splicing between the furnace and the A/C unit. Your comment about the A/C being the Y leg was the key to solving the issue. I had both the R and the RC connected to the same side, the wire I had labeled RC belonged on the other side.. as it was the Y leg, I must have mislabeled it. Thanks.

  • Is there a way to reactivate a flash drive that isn't recognized when inserted.?

Problem is a flash drive that quit working. The files I want to retrieve are there but I need to find a way to reactivate the drive itself because the computer doesn't recognize it when inserted into a USB slot. I know the slots are operational because they recognize my other drives readily. I'm certain the problem is in the flash drive itself because the same results are present when the drive is inserted into another computer. The manufacturer of the drive has told me they have no means of retrieving any data from the drive if its defective but will replace it. I'm looking for a way to access the drive so don't lose the files as I have no other backups.

I have tried several file recovery programs suggested by others but I run into the same problem, none can retrieve the files if the computer doesn't recognize that the drive is present. Any ideas?

  • Data recovery from a flash drive?

I have a 4GB Gizmo flash drive containing a large number of photos. Apparently due to a malfunction in the drive itself, it is no longer recognized by the computer when inserted into a USB port. I have tried two of the freeware data recovery programs available on line with negative results. I am willing to spend a reasonable amount to recover the photos but not a fortune as would be the case if sent to a professional. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have tried inserting the drive prior to a start-up but the computer still fails to recognize it. Have also tried it in all 4 USB slots available as well as in another computer.

  • Temporary loss of IE?

First, I'm running Vista on a two year old Sony laptop. Yesterday my computer began the day operating normally except for being a bit slow. After an hour or so I allowed it to hibernate for a few minutes while doing something else. When I started it up again, my task bar at the bottom had been altered and the icon for IE had disappeared. I went to the start menu and where IE is usually located at the top was the word "Internet". I clicked it but got an error message indicating that the program could not be found.

I then tried to locate the IE program file on the C drive but couldn't find it. Then I did a restart to re-boot but had the same problem when I re-started. I went to Restore Center and tried to restore to the last restore point. I kept getting an error message saying that I needed to insert the backup disc from 8/17/2008. I did as it said but still got the same error message.

Finally shut it down completely and then re-started it. It returned to the same situation as before. This time however, I tried to restore and everything worked just like its supposed to and all was back to normal.

Aside from snide comments about the reliability of Vista does anyone have any ideas as to why it happened? I run a continous anti-virus program and did a scan after I got things straightened out but no infection was found.

  • Cleaning driveway after vehicle fire?

The vehicle caught fire while sitting on smooth concrete driveway, burned the rear to the ground after the gas tank burst, melted the alloy wheels, tires and a various plastic parts onto the surface.

We have used a pressure washer and a shovel to remove all of the build-up but the stains remain. Tried a commercial driveway cleaner but it wasn't even remotely effective. Anybody had success with any other method?

  • Clarification of capital gains?

This subject seems to need some detailed clarification unless I've made the wrong determinations. Are these statements true?

1.On your tax return for any given year you can cancel out taxes due on capital gains if you have equal or more in capital losses.

    2. If you have more capital losses than gains in any taxable year you can use up to $3000 in carryover losses to reduce any other source of income for that year.

    3. If, in subsequent years, you still have a balance in carryover losses they can be used to reduce taxable income in amounts of up to $3000, until depleted.

    4. The $3000 limit on carryover losses has nothing to do with the total allowable off set of capital gains by capital losses in any one tax year. It applies only to the carryover portion if losses exceed gains in that particular year.

I've read numerous articles at many different website and it appears that there's a lot of confusion regarding the $3000 amount. Most people seem to assume that it is a limit as to how much in capital gains can be offset by capital losses each year, unless of course I'm wrong in my statements above.
