What will I do before going to Navy Diver school?

Quick intro:

21 year old male here, in college with 67 semester hours after this semester. I took scuba diving this semester and just completed my certification dive for my open water cert on the weekend of Nov. 23rd and I absolutely loved it. I want to make diving a career as I really can't see myself sitting at a desk all my life.

What I really want to do is join the US Navy and be a ND or be an AIRR as a secondary option. I understand that doing either of these requires a selective selection process before starting training, but I have one lingering question: What would I do before being accepted into these schools? I would be full time active duty, by the way.

Thanks for your time! If you need anymore info from me (besides my SSN) to give me a better answer, just ask.

Update:

@NavyCrab Thanks for your answer.

So the website you linked me to says, "After completion of Recruit Training or acceptance in the Navy Diver program from the Fleet...." this has me under the impression I can go straight into NDSTC from boot camp if I qualify. Is there a wait list for recruits? Is there a wait list for fleet members?

I found this website.. http://www.nsonswmentor.com/Navy-Diver.html and it sounds like I'll have to pass the physical screening in the DEP before consideration.

Update 2:

@NavyCrab thanks a lot for all your answers, I'll speak to a recruiter tomorrow

    First, you will have to try to get a Navy Diver Challenge Contract; so go talk to the recruiter. The initial contract for ND is 6 years Active Duty (& 2 years IRR).

    Before you, actually, get to Dive School, you will have to go to boot camp & ND Prep. Course first.

    Btw, you civilian certification does not mean $hit in the Navy and I would suggest that you do not brag about it to the instructors, since it may just paint a bigger target on you.

    ADDED: You can get a Navy Diver Challenge Contract before going to boot camp. In order for you to get the ND Contract, you will have to meet ASVAB Requirement, Medical Screening, Dive Medical Screening, Physical Screening Test, and a whole lot of other requirements (a recruiter can give you more details). Remember that just meeting the minimum PST Score does not guarantee that you will get the contract; it is quite competitive.

    If you have a contract and do not manage to lose it by the end of boot camp (the contract can be taken away for many different reasons), then you will start Navy Diver Pipeline, which is Navy Diver Prep. Course (it is located at Center for EOD & Diving; it is across the street from boot camp at NS Great Lakes, IL); you cannot go to Dive School (NDSTC) until you have passed the prep. course.

    You'll need to talk to a recruiter. You can apply for dive school while in boot camp. You also may be able to apply when you see the recruiter and do your waiting while still a civilian. Normally they'll schedule you for boot camp depending on when your school starts. So for instance if school starts May 4th, you'll start boot camp the end of Jan. Otherwise they have you doing chores and such while you wait for class to start.
