Christmas And The Left?

This one just kind of dawned on me (yes, I can be slow...:) but the question goes out to those who try to remove Christian iconography, statements, etc. from any public areas.

I will concede I have no respect for people of this nature and the concept offends me, but I am asking this out of honest curiosity and will respond with civility and respect for different opinions as best I can...

We see many news articles about people and groups that want no mention of Christmas on public lands and buildings. Portraits of Christ must be removed. The Ten Commandments cannot be displayed. This is labelled as the so-called "separation of church and state" and is the tactic used to change freedom OF religion into freedom FROM religion.

With that being said, does it not follow that since Christmas is a Christian holiday in origin and celebration that it CANNOT (technically) be a National Holiday? By making it a National Holiday, the government is putting one religion over all others, correct? If you do not support this argument, which has logical value, how can you support (if you do) the removal of any Christian aspects from public grounds? Is it not hypocritical?

Update:

To those citing the pagan holiday as reason that it is not a Christian holiday in origin. The inspiration and development of something does not alter it's actual origin. By your own arguments, the Catholic Church (Christians) took the holiday and fashioned their own version (Christmas), therefore creating the holiday itself from another. It became something else that is Christian in it's foundation.

@Mikey: yes, I support the Constitution and agree with you up to a point. The separation is based on interpretation through Thomas Jefferson.

@tonal: So public schools are GOVERNMENT?

@Rebeckah: You present a valid debate, but the foundation is solid. The Catholic Church creatyed the holiday itself.

Christmas is NOT a "christian holiday in origin".

The Catholic church borrowed the idea of Saturnalia from the Roman pagans.

//With that being said, does it not follow that since Christmas is a Christian holiday in origin and celebration that it CANNOT (technically) be a National Holiday?//

Actually, Christmas is a pagan holiday by origin. The Catholic Church appropriated it later. Virtually every culture around the world has Winter Solstice holidays.

//By making it a National Holiday, the government is putting one religion over all others, correct?//

No, but it's an understandable mistake since you are confused about the origin of Christmas.

//If you do not support this argument, which has logical value, how can you support (if you do) the removal of any Christian aspects from public grounds?//

Your argument does not have logical value because it's based on a false premise. Christmas was originally a pagan holiday. Just because the Catholic Church appropriated the holiday it does not follow that it is a "Christian" holiday. It is merely a celebration of the shortest day of the year.

    //Is it not hypocritical?//

    No, it isn't.

Edit: No, the foundation is NOT "solid". The Catholic Church appropriated a pagan holiday and renamed it -- just like they did with Easter. It is, at its core, a celebration of the return of the sun to the world.

Only a hand full of people, not everyone on the left, actually protest Christian iconography, statements, etc, from any public areas. They are small, but pretty vocal group. These should be removed from government buildings.. Christmas is just as much a pagan holiday as it is a Christian celebration.. Yes, it a day off from work for most people and the post office and banks are closed, but the government doesn't make us go to church and praise Jesus..

I have some liberal views and I am an agnostic.. My family and I celebrate the secular aspects of the Christmas season..decorations, trees, yule log, mistletoe , Santa, being with friends and family..I don't really agree with the folks who get all bent out of shape about religious symbols, but they have a right to express their opinions as much as everyone else..

The premise of your question is incorrect.

We don't want removal of religious icons from all public areas. That's absurd.

We want them removed from GOVERNMENT property; it denotes government promotion of religion, which is unconstitutional.

Courts have ruled both ways on the situation; most considered it OK if other religions and secular icons were included.

Don't get started on Christmas being a "Christian holiday in origin," since it was a pagan holiday, and ripped off other religions. For example, what religion is this?

The leader born on December 25 to a virgin mother, visited by royalty bearing gifts.

    Great teacher with twelve disciples.

Called "the way, the truth and the light."

Principal festival was what is now Easter, when he was resurrected.

Believed in baptism to save souls.

    Sunday is sacred.

    Belief in heaven and hell.

A huge flood at the beginning of history.

Belief in the last judgment, a resurrection of the dead.

That's the tenets of those who worship Mithra.

Add: Yes, public schools are GOVERNMENT. What else might it be? Who's paying for it?

No. that is not a good comparison

Public land and property should be used for the public good, not for promoting one religion over another. and holidays you just stay home. Its not promoting anything. the govt isnt forcing you to go to church on Christmas

I think that they cannot possibly destroy Christmas. They will succeed in time in totally eradicating any and all public display of anything to do with Christianity...for a time.

The holiday itself has already changed from "Christmas" to "winter holiday" in many places and within government, so this is small potatos.

What you are witnessing is the same spirit that motivated the Bolshiveks. Of course this time they think they will get it right. They will never get it right, because they are wrong by their very construction.
