Do you use both the regular brake and emergency brake when parking on a hill?

just wondering, when parking on a hill, would you...

pull over, put your car in park, then use the emergency brake? or is there some other way to park on a hill?

Update:

yea.... no one uses that break "every" time they park... i just wanted to know if you use both brakes on a hill lol

Clue: There is not such thing as an "emergency brake."

When you realize that it is the *parking brake* you will know that you use the parking brake *every* time you park.

The parking (not emergency) brake is the only proper way to keep a car safely braked on a steep incline. Putting in gear (or in P) is just an additional safety measure which by itself doesn't guarantee that the car won't move, which depends on the weight and slope. Turning the wheels into the curb is another good precaution and the three combined provide a failproof stationary braking.

You should first brake the car properly (using the parking brake) and then set a gear (P, R or 1st, depending on type of transmission and uphill/downhill). Doing it the other way round loads the transmission with something it wasn't designed to do.

There's no use to use both, except during driving and/or starting off up a hill - that's when using the parking brake to prevent rollback saves a lot of clutch wear, unless you're very good with switching from the brake to the gas pedal.

When you park on almost flat road, putting in P (or 1st/R) may be enough, but don't make it a habit - a misjudged slope may prove quite expensive.

It's called a "Parking Brake, " not an emergency brake.

Use both, but not in that order. Put on the emergency brake first, then put the car in park (there is less stress on the transmission if you do it in the order that I said).

I usually use my emergency brake. Turn your wheels towards the curb if you're really worried. Dimo j is wrong. Standards have parking brakes. Automatics have emergency brakes and "park" on their shifters.

Turn your wheels the correct way so they catch on the kerb if you do start to slip.

Wheel chocks if you are an at-risk vehicle (tanker, bus etc.)
