When people say underground, what do they really mean?
When people say underground, I'll go; Yeah! I love underground music! and then the people will reply with a strew of indie bands that I DO NOT KNOW. I'm confused. To me underground should mean any music that isn't currently popular or wasn't popular (aka, non-mainstream).
Instead most people that I know seem to use it to refer to indie music.
So what is its true meaning?

Your dead on with what it means, its just that most indie bands technically ARE underground by the vety definition you just said. Even you haven't heard of them

underground music like punk I guess I would say..."secret-ish"? Like, no one really lisents to it which is true, no one really lisents to punk, a handful of ppl do, though
