Just had tonsillectomy. Surgeon said my tonsil had been full of pus?
I had my tonsils removed yesterday. I later learned in detail that when my doctor cut into my right tonsil, it drained a lot of pus, and that both tonsils generally just fell apart as he worked on them. Prior to surgery, I didn't remember seeing any pus pockets, nor did I know they were so brittle. I'd had chronic tonsillitis and a few episodes of strep. Can someone explain what happened to the tissue?

Tonsillitis is an infection caused by bacteria. It is quite common for pus to be present with an infection. Pus consists of dead white blood cells, dead bacteria and dead tissue, and is a sign that the body has been busy trying to fight the infection.
Repeated infections, such as chronic or recurring tonsillitis and strep throat can weaken the tissue, because it doesn't have a chance to heal in between infections.
