Is this appropriate for a hostess gift?

My husband works in a satellite office of a small company. This year, the Christmas party will be at the boss's house.

Is a hostess gift appropriate? If so, what is a good choice? I have some fancy bars of handmade scented soap; would one of these be appropriate? Should I also give something to the boss?

Update:

Andrew: You don't have to be insulting. You could have said, "It would be rude to show up at someone's house w/o a gift." If you are going to continue to insult people who don't know everything you do, then do us ignoramusus a favor and stay off answers. That's what this is for: to get answers.

Only the English are rude enough to turn up at someone's house without a gift. Oh yeah and the Dutch.
