  • Why does my son's VW Jetta need three tries to start?

It's a 1996. It runs fine after it starts. When he turns the key, it will turn over but not start until the third try (or so). Then he can stop it again (like for shopping) and it will restart just fine. The problem recurs when it's been sitting for several hours (like when he goes to work).

I'm thinking it's a part that needs to be primed; three tries (approx.) and it's primed. Then it slowly loses its prime when the car sits for hours.

He's replaced the fuel pump and ignition coil. He also changed the oil.

Its performance has improved since he replaced the parts, but it's still a problem.

It hasn't been driven for several months. (Son has an issue with the threat of being stranded!)

  • Inside a scallop, I found a scallop-shaped hard thing. What is it?

It is white and, while hard, it doesn't seem to be real hard. I think I could crush it if I tried. In my research, I discovered that scallops do make pearls, but they are not white, and there is no mention of them being scallop-shaped.

  • What would happen if US courts implemented sharia?

I'd like a few real-life examples, if possible; if not, some theoretical examples will suffice. I'm asking because some states are enacting laws to prevent it, and I'm trying to get the big picture.

I agree that our law system is good and reasonably fair, and we should not have a foreign religious system imposed on us. However, if someone wants to leave their estate according to sharia rules, there is nothing to prevent it.

If two people get into a dispute and both want it settled according to sharia, then what's preventing them from settling it privately according to their mutually agreed-upon rules? But if person A wants sharia and person B doesn't, then it should default to the law of the land. Surely the court wouldn't rule according to sharia if one person isn't Muslim and doesn't want it?

  • Why did my YouTube Downloader slow to snail's pace when it hit 49%?

I had two youtubes downloading this morning; at 49%, they both slowed to almost a stop. So I paused one hoping the other would speed up; it didn't. It's not my internet connection because that was working fine otherwise.

My sons also have this problem, but their friend can come over and download w/o difficulty.

We all (including my sons' friend) have the free version.

  • Do companies play really horrible quality music while you're on hold in an effort to discourage calls?

It sounds like a cassette tape that's very old and stretched. The music itself might be pleasant.

Several years ago, a department in the Virginia government (I don't remember which one) played what sounded like a piano student's first recital piece. Dreadful!

With today's digital technology, there is no reason they can't make our wait a reasonably pleasant experience. That's why I think they are punishing us on purpose.

    what do you think?

  • Is there a good company who will ship me diabetes supplies?

The one I'm using is becoming increasingly difficult to work with.

Yes, I've called my doctor's office; I am awaiting a reply. But he doesn't know everything; you might know of a company he doesn't.

Yes, I can work with the current company, and I also have a workaround. Don't worry.

  • Must PETA employees be vegetarian or vegan?

Just wondering what they would do if they found out an employee had hosted a meat barbeque over the weekend.

No hate, slams, etc., please. I just want an answer.

  • Are there any quality wood screws for sale in America?

We bought some Hillman screws to install shelf brackets. Hubby was screwing one in and it broke off! We looked and discovered they were made in China.

He went to a different hardware store today and was told that they're all made in China and they're all junk.

So. . .anyone know of any that the salesman didn't know about?

  • Why am I getting a call from "92293"?

That's all the number my caller ID displays. There is no one there when I answer; I just get a dial tone (I answer after only 2-3 rings). When I called them back, I got Verizon Wireless stating that the number could not be completed as dialed.

Who are these jerks and why is the call even going through?

  • Is this appropriate for a hostess gift?

My husband works in a satellite office of a small company. This year, the Christmas party will be at the boss's house.

Is a hostess gift appropriate? If so, what is a good choice? I have some fancy bars of handmade scented soap; would one of these be appropriate? Should I also give something to the boss?

  • What is a good refrigerator as regards durability?

Our Kenmore died after only 6-1/2 years, and I am thoroughly disgusted to discover that refrigerators are only warranted for 1 year now. (At least Lowe's will let you extend that for a reasonable price--yay Lowe's!)

I am still in shock. American goods used to be good quality, but now the manufacturers seem to be in a race to the bottom.

We are going refrigerator shopping tonight, so any help would be appreciated.

Oh--our house has an open floor plan, so I would also like a quiet 'fridge.

    Any suggestions?

  • What's wrong with Edu-Track?

I have used their program for years and have been happy with it, including their tech support. However, my computer crashed and they WILL NOT respond to my requests for the key to get the updates to my program. (I have the disc for v. 1.40, but have always had to re-download the updates whenever my computer crashed or we got a new one. No problems until now.)

This time, it has been almost two weeks, and I have emailed them several times--no response. I even called their phone number (for sales only, but I didn't know how else to get hold of them). I leave a message but they don't call back.

It's a small company; did they consume raw milk and get arrested or something?
