Why are college students so closed minded?

Why does it seem that anyone these days who has a bit of "Higher Education" are some of the most stubborn, closed minded, academically bigotous, conceited, self important, narcissist's.

I've been informed by a cousin attending a university that college is hardly a place for free thinking or even ideas of one's own. It is a place for learning and experimenting with what IS and nothing more. It is not a place to Hypothesize, Theorize, Idealize or Philosophize.

It seems to me that Institutions of higher education have become indoctrination camps where people are taught to disregard human curiosity, human thoughts, human spirituality or even a passion for progress.

With places like this indoctrinating our youth it is no wonder that people with higher educations think and behave the way they do, they have become mere machines incapable of true thought.

They have been Programmed to do and never think, to think only what their but never do.

That is my theory on the matter what perchance are some of yours?

Update:

While I admit this is a generalization, it is impossible to refer to a large group such as "College Students" without generalizing to a certain degree, also those who nitpick obvious and intentional things such as this are yet another observation in MY OWN experience as to the validity of these claims.

I'd be willing to bet that those of you who spoke like this are or were recently college students.

Are you truly incapable of thinking about anything in a manner that is not literal and mechanistic?

I had a crash in my fourth year and am now coping with some psychological issues. To me, it seems more about testing. You go through some horrible hellish experiences, like surviving three nights on five hours of sleep and two meals simply because there is no time to care for yourself. You take a test that is unrealistically hard, with tens of pages of essays. At some point you don't even know what you're fighting so hard for, but it is so hellishly difficult, and you haven't seen your friends in so many weeks that you make a decision without realizing it that this MUST be worth something, and that you WILL say it's the greatest thing for eternity, because otherwise you can't stay sane.

Read a wiki or synopsis of Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew". It's about breaking a person. It was ironic that I had a class about it. A lot of the methods seep out into student life, like sleeping and eating restrictions, and being told things you'll believe only when in a weak and manipulable state.

Oh look, another one of the millions of these types of questions that is posted at least a thousand times a day.

"Why is/are [insert noun here] so [insert negative adjective here]."

What you asked is a generalization. Not all college student's are "stubborn, closed minded, academically bigotous, conceited, self important, narcissist's." And what your cousin said is a single account/opinion of college, it is not an absolute truth. For many people, college is precisely the place to "Hypothesize, Theorize, Idealize or Philosophize." I just depends on the institution and the student what experiences will be had.

So one person said this, therefore it must be true, correct? Of course, the blue collar world is a hotbed of creative thought and open mindedness. I generally teat things like this from people who didn't have the opportunity to go to college, or people who aren't bright enough to go.

Sure, there are mindsets present in colleges, just as there is in any setting, be ic academic or otherwise. The desire to think outside the box is an internal one. The setting is irrelevant.

And while some college students may feel they are better than people without a college education, they aren't, they are just better educated, and have a higher earning potential, statistically.

It's always been like that. These people don't change their opinions until much later, after they've struggled to find work and pay bills for a while. This is why most young people have historically voted Democrat and older people have voted Republican (although these days there isn't much difference in either party).
