My mom has stage four colon cancer?

My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer last month and just a week ago they have determined it is stage four. Her liver is fine and so are her lungs and every organ in her body. They have determined it is stage four because of lymph nodes near her lungs and abdominal are "Active". She is super healthy everyone has said so, they are so surprised at how healthy she is despite her cancer. When we told the doctors we were going to seek a second opinion they were not happy about it. But we are taking her out the hospital and hoping sloan kettering will take her and perform surgery to remove the mass in her colon and the chemo can treat whats left. Has anyone gone throught this? Help please

Update:

Yea they even said she has two-four years to live and only 6months if she refused treatment. How can they just write off my mom and not choose to remove the mass? UGH

Update 2:

John they said they did not want to operate because it is close to the sphincter muscle.

Your mom may not be a good candidate for surgery because the tumor is too big to be removed, or is involved with some of the other vital organs. I advise you to get her to a good teaching hospital for a second opinion. Sloan Kettering is an excellent choice. Colon cancer can be treated but it can also kill so whatever you do needs to be done asap. Good luck. I have a friend who had stage IV colon ca and had chemo, no surgery two years ago and has no trace of the cancer now so it can have a good outlook. Don't give up.

I am not a doctor but I know that stage 4 colon cancer has to be removed and followed with chemo to kill off any floating cells. I live in UK and if anyone was diagnosed with any stage of colon cancer it would be removed as soon as possible, Good Luck

It is unusual for doctors to be unhappy about second opinions, but this is not curable no matter where you take her. You mother would have been told why surgery is not recommended and in most cases surgery is done.

So maybe they want to shrink the tumor first.

I went thru this with my sister. She liked her doctor and wouldn't listen. It NEVER hurts to get other opinions. Most doctors don't like it when you say that, that is questioning their judgement. Get other opinions.
