Why would a gas man come cut off a gas leak and then tell you that you need to call a plumber?

I know the gas man cut off the gas to the stove but can't understand why I was told to call a plumber

The gas man works for the gas utility company. He is not responsible for the gas piping in your house. If there is a leak in your house they shut the gas off for safety reasons. You are then responsible for getting the piping in your house repaired. Plumbers repair both water pipes and gas pipes. A plumber is who you need to call to fix your gas leak.

Your issue is in the portion of the system that belongs to you so you need to arrange to have it fixed. I assume that a plumber can work on gas lines as well as water ones. Simple!!

plumbers deal with waste pipes, vent pipes, domestic water, chilled water, heating water, fuel gas lines, refrigeration lines, medical gas lines etc, etc. they aren't just turd-herders. a plumber is the right call for fixing a natural gas or propane leak.

i agree with you . if he cut off the gas to your stove . Then i assume that it is your stove with gas leak. not the gas pipe leading to it . Why would you call plumber for gas leak in your stove. Or did he just off the gas to stove for safety ? And he thinks you have a leak in your gas pipe ? Did the gas smell go away after he cut off the gas to your stove ? if so then the leak is in your stove or the little hose/pipe that connects from the gas cut off valve at wall to your stove. if that is it , then you just need a new gas suppy hose . You should have told us where the gas leak is.
