Should I put EMG 81/85 actives on my Gibson Melody Maker?
Even though the body will need surgery?
I love 81/85s. I have them on three other Gibsons and I was thinking it'd be interesting to install some on a tiny little Melody Maker. I'm also having work done on the neck, head stock and replacing the tuners and nut. Turning it into a bad @as little head banger ;)
Thoughts? Its a Golden Era, sun burst, single cut with parted single coils, btw

Though I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion of the 81/85's:
Avoid Surgery -- It *will* change the sustain of a Melody Maker.
Stay passive & kick some a s s with these:
Try putting a Gibson Dirty Fingers p/u at the bridge and a
Di Marzio Crunch Lab p/u at the neck (below -- stats are 1/2 way down the page).

The diversity and contrast between the two pickups will be very dynamic for you

If its body requires surgery that's all the more reason.
However it goes, you still end up with THE best pick-ups there are.
