Where did the myth come from that the world could produce enough food for everyone to have four meals a day?

Throughout my childhood I heard many people saying that if wealth were equally spread, the world would produce enough for it's entire population to have four meals each day. Where do you think this came from and how far is it from being true?

I don't know about 4 meals a day, but UNESCO estimates that in 1995 the surplus food production of first world countries exceeded the food deficit of third world countries for the first time. So it's not a myth, hunger is just a question of distribution.

In fact, if every American household contributed 10% of their net income to charity, it would feed, shelter, and educate every refugee in the Eastern Hemisphere, according to the book "Nudge"
