I have a pretty nasty ingrown toenail, it's a repeat offender...?

I've made an appointment for this Friday at 9:30am to hopefully get the entire nail removed as this will be the third time in a year and a half that it's bothered me. And this procedure has been recommended by my podiatrist for "next time" as well. But I have to work at 4pm Friday, and I kind of don't want to call in if I don't have to. I work at a job with lots of standing and a bit of walking. I'm wondering if I will be able to go to work after this procedure or will I have to call in? It'll only be a four hour shift. I will have Saturday off so that won't be a problem. Anyone with experience in this area would be wonderful. I'm kind of nervous. Thanks.

Update:

Also the podiatrist told me the toenail is not my doing, it will just keep growing back like that.

Update 2:

Snow White- I pretty much have used all my other options to no avail. My toe will always get all nasty and slimy and gross and trust me there is nothing I can do about it. I've tried many times. There is no middle ground either. One day it's fine and the next it's nasty and I can't touch it without causing myself intense pain and I can't do anything anyway.

well you wont be able to wear shoes, so if you have to have shoes for work then call it in. but for "next time' don't get your toenail removed. that should only be used for extreme cases. a better way of approaching the problem is being proactive instead of fixing the problem after it becomes a disaster. here is a list of methods of dealing with ingrown toenails http://www.ingrowntoenailtreatments.com/

Using a method of changing how you balance yourself will prevent this. So wear an orthotic and have a bunion removed.
