Why do red states have the highest murder rates?

The top 6 are all red. Even though Michigan went for Obama the last election, it's state legislature and governorship are all Republican.

Shouldn't all that "tough on crime" stuff and cutting welfare and giving tax cuts to the rich be working?

    Most murders happen in certain parts of certain cities involving certain ethnic groups involved in drug gangs. Extract those geographically centered populations engaged in street gang activities and the murder rate in the US is far less than or no worse than any other country...or state no matter what 'color!
