Why do I always blank out when I'm asked a question?

This is really affecting my grades. When I study material and feel I understand it well it's all fine and dandy. Then when I'm asked a question whether it's on a written test or oral response my mind goes blank and I have a hard time even forming sentences that are relevant to the material at hand. My grades have taken a turn for the worst and my problem may even lead me to be held back a grade. While I'm studying I have an extremely short attention span like when I'm reading a paragraph I have to read it over and over again to barely get an idea of what it's talking about. I am a sophomore girl in high school, any advice would help!!

Sounds like you're spacing out most of the time: to me it's more like you're experiencing mind blank. But since u didn't mention anything about stress, I assume you are just having problem with response to question. I think you should try doing past papers or doing textbook question it will test your real understanding towards a certain topic. Try to study at a better quiet no distraction e.g. Library if u can't concentrate at home. Listening to radio or watching tv programmes or bbc may help your listening ..at first you may not understand that much but as u listen everyday u will get better at things. But last but not least you need to revise the notes given by the teacher taught on that day every time after school.

This felt like how i feel/experience.

I am not the only one!

I go blank whenever I'm asked a question pertaining to the text/book...

also yes, attention span's like that of a ferret. :P

Anyway, the only way out is to discipline yourself to sit and study.

    How?

Set a time to complete something.

eg: 1 hour to finish a chapter in the book.

This might help you get motivated to read fast.

    also re-reading will help.

Underline important words and then you can write/talk anything by weaving these words in your sentences.

Hope this helps! All the best!!
