What Happens When You Tell Your Doctor That You're Suicidal?

I've already gone to the doctor about being depressed and have been taking Lexapro for the past few weeks. However, I've just ended up feeling worse so far and last week I came close to killing myself but ended up having second thoughts.

I know that one of the possible side effects of taking Lexapro is the increasing or intensifying of suicidal thoughts. That's what I've been experiencing so I've been thinking of talking to the doctor about changing my medication. I'm just very worried about telling my doctor about how I had intended to commit suicide, although I don't think I'm in any imminent danger at the moment. The thought of being institutionalised seriously terrifies me.

So, what exactly is most likely to happen if I tell my doctor about this? How likely is it that I'll end up being put in a hospital?

I've been through this, back in 1997. Funny, one of the symptoms of depression is suicidal thoughts, so you wouldn't think that a side affect of depression medication would be increased suicidal thoughts.

My advice would be to be honest about what you are experiencing. I'm sure all he will do is change your medication. Prozac worked best for me. Went through a few others before we got it right. I've been Prozac-free since 2003.
