The Radeon R9 290x and GeForce 780 Ti are both faster than a Titan and about half the price. The advantage of the Titan is the whole "supercomputer technology" which means it's a gaming-class card that's capable of doing some workstation stuff.
A single powerful card is always a safer choice than two less powerful ones. SLI/Crossfire can be a pain because not every game will be properly programmed for multiple GPUs. Plus you don't have to worry about stuff like microstutter.
