does start 8 really make windows 8 work like 7?

Just got a new laptop (not a touch screen) and really dislike windows 8. I was told the program http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ that costs about 5 bucks would make it look and act like windows 7 - does anyone have experience with this? Already spent hours trying to make the thing user friendly for me (I use it for email, internet searches, not movies etc). and I'm reluctant to tackle it again if I'm just going to end up with the same thing. My current laptop is nearly 4 years old and needs a battery and has a missin key, but it still might be my best bet to fix it up until windows 8 has improved. any help would be appreciated!

Windows 8 can be customized to work just like 7 if you want.

Turn off the app switching gesture. Windows key + I → Change PC settings → General → Turn off “When I swipe from the left edge, switch directly to my most recent app.”

Swap default metro/modern apps for desktop programs. Windows key + X → Control Panel. In the search box type “default programs” then click the “Set your default programs” link. Default Programs will load a list of programs for to select from. Click Windows Media Player to highlight it then click the “Set this program as default” button. Do the same thing for Windows Photo Viewer and your favorite PDF viewer (like Adobe Reader).

After that you can drop in a start menu. Start8 and StartIsBack are two popular, paid, options. Classic Shell is free. I think most if not all of them give you options to disable hot/active corners and boot directly to the desktop.

As mentioned, Windows 8.1 does add a start button plus the boot to desktop option as well as disabling the top right hot/active corner.

There's an interesting rumor going around that says Windows 8.2 will bring back a start menu and allow metro/modern apps to run in a window interface on the desktop. But that'll be sometime next year if it happens.

Start 8 is the best windows 8 alternitive. It brings back the knoledge of windows 7. When I tried it it didnt slow down my pc or anything and the best thing about that is that you can still get to the windows 8 start menu. I would get it if I were you since you dont like the normal windows 8 menu. I personally uninstalled it because I prefer my operating systems to be close to how they came.

"t still might be my best bet to fix it up until windows 8 has improved."

Where have you been? Windows 8.1 was released a few weeks ago and fixes this specific "Start Button" problem, plus lots more problems.

Just do all Windows Updates, and you'll have the 8.1 UPGRADE in virtually no time at all.

TIP: But you can still use Start8 ($), or the FREE Classic Shell, if you want to.
