Will my beta's fin regrow?
I have a fancy beta, just under a year old. We thought he had gotten sick and were expecting him to die as he was always just lying on the bottom of the tank breathing heavily. (He is in a 5.5 gallon tank with a heater and filter). I've realized though, what I thought may have been fin rot is actually an injury, he is missing like 2/3 of the back of his tail fin (the fin that follows out from the back of his body streamline, not above or below him). He has a lot of trouble swimming and seems exhausted as he struggles to swim up for food. I think he got stuck to the filter grate and tore up his tail, it's all tattered and half gone.
What should I do for him?

You can get like spongey stuff that goes over the intake of the filter that will keep it from happening again, I use it:)
Also, I would try getting him a "beta leaf" which is a suction cup leaf that sticks to the side for him to rest on. Put it about 2/3 of the way up the tank so he doesn't have to work hard to get up there. If you can turn down the filter speed, I would. Treat him like a little old man that you have to make the house safe for.
Try buying him some high protein food, like freeze dried blood worms. Hold them in a tweezers just on the surface of the water, so he doesn't have to chase them. I did that with one of my betas who flipped out of the water and tore his fins, with great success.
You may want to invest in some anti bacterial water treatment, to make sure his fins don't get infected. Try API Tetracycline. Follow the instructions on the pack, it's very easy to use.
Stresscoat water treatment takes out chlorine/chloramine/heavy metals AND builds an articficial slime coat to help the fish stay healthy. They have little bottles for cheapo.
Total Cost of everything I mentioned (though of course you don't need to buy it all!): About $20, and you get at least a year's usage out of it all. I hope this helps, and feel free to email me any further questions or anything. Thank you!

I have a betta with torn fins too. You just have to wait for them to grow back. After 1-2 weeks you will see like white stuff grow around the fins. Then the color will start to show. Depending on how bad the fins are torn will determine how long it takes for them to grow back. All you have to do is feed him well and make sure them don't get torn again
